SOUL VIBRATIONS
“Color is a power which directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
– Wassily Kandinsky
I love this quote by Kandinsky. This idea of art delivering ‘vibration in the soul’ is beautiful. It’s a fantastic sentiment for any artist to aspire to. It made me think of my own approach to my work. Very often I’ll explore hundreds of texture and colour possibilities to find a connection that sparks a reaction in me. The intent is never premeditated, for me, it’s important to keep this process open. Enabling new opportunities is the only way the work can continue to evolve.
For me that’s the beauty of this series, it’s going to change, grow and blossom in ways I would never have considered or anticipated when I began. As the great David Bowie once said “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.” The beauty of the unknown is where the magic lies. The interesting thing about each portrait I create is that a certain combination of colour and texture that works for one, won’t necessarily give the same impression to another. That’s the struggle and the satisfaction in this work. You can have the same ingredients for a piece, and play the same visual ‘notes’, but the vibrations are completely different.
